Ewan Birney wins Lombardia è Ricerca international prize

British bioinformatician Ewan Birney has been awarded the 2026 “Lombardia è Ricerca” international prize, a one-million-euro recognition often referred to as the “Lombard Nobel.” Birney, the director of the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), was honored for his work in predictive medicine using artificial intelligence and big data.

The jury recognized Birney for his role as a senior author of the DELPHI study, which developed a large-scale AI model capable of processing clinical and biological data across more than one thousand diagnostic categories to create predictive models for human diseases.

The prize structure allocates 30% of the funds to the winner and 70% to a translational research project conducted in collaboration with Lombardy-based research institutions. Birney’s designated project focuses on cardiovascular diseases.
