EWE to supply 10,000 t of green hydrogen per year to Salzgitter steel plant

The steelmaker Salzgitter AG and energy provider EWE have signed a long‑term contract to deliver around 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen each year from the 320‑MW production plant being built in Emden. The deliveries will start in 2030 and run for an initial seven‑year period. It is the first large‑scale off‑take of hydrogen for EWE and Salzgitter’s first major supply agreement of this type, aimed at gradually shifting the company’s steel production toward near‑zero emissions.

Both parties called on German policymakers for continued support, noting that the federal government is backing the steel conversion with €925 million and the hydrogen plant with €267 million. Salzgitter board member Gunnar Groebler and EWE chief Stefan Dohler highlighted the need for competitive electricity prices, clear regulations and investment security to close the cost gap and reduce business risks.
