Ex-banker Daniel Vorcaro seeks personal data of journalist Malu Gaspar in Brazil
Brazilian journalism associations, including the National Association of Newspapers (ANJ) and the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji), called for an immediate investigation after Federal Police recovered messages showing ex‑banker Daniel Vorcaro discussing with publicist Thiago Miranda how to obtain personal data on Globo columnist Malu Gaspar. The conversations, dated March‑April 2025, reveal attempts to access the journalist’s financial transactions, credit‑score details and other private information, allegedly to intimidate her reporting on the Banco Master case. The parties considered offering a multimillion‑dollar proposal to silence her, though they claimed no compromising data was found.
The associations condemned the effort as an intimidation of press freedom and urged enforcement of Brazil’s General Data Protection Law (LGPD). The incident follows earlier allegations that Vorcaro ordered similar actions against other media figures, prompting broader concerns over the safety of investigative journalism in Brazil.
