César Jáuregui linked to treason charges over CIA involvement in Chihuahua

Former Chihuahua Attorney General César Jáuregui Moreno has been formally linked to a criminal process for the crime of treason to the fatherland. The decision was issued by Judge Ricardo Alfonso Santos Dorantes at the Altiplano Federal Penal Center in the State of Mexico.

The federal charges stem from an April 2026 anti-drug operation in the El Pinal community, Morelos, Chihuahua, aimed at dismantling a clandestine laboratory. The Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) alleges that Jáuregui allowed the unauthorized participation of U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agents during the operation. The incident, which included a highway accident, resulted in the deaths of two Chihuahua police officers and two U.S. citizens identified as CIA agents.

The FGR presented approximately 150 pieces of evidence to support the prosecution. Consequently, the judge maintained preventive detention for Jáuregui, who will remain incarcerated at the Altiplano facility during a two-month supplementary investigation period.

This federal case is separate from ongoing state-level proceedings in Chihuahua, where Jáuregui faces charges for illegal exercise of public service and coalition. Jáuregui has denied the allegations, suggesting they are politically motivated, and his defense team has indicated intentions to appeal the decision.
