Ex-Edo AG Samson Osagie Urges Full Terrorism Sentences in Nigeria

Former Edo State Attorney General Dr. Samson Osagie called for persons convicted under Nigeria's Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022 to serve their full sentences, arguing that only strict punishment can deter future attacks. He warned that granting presidential clemency or any legal mercy to convicted terrorists would undermine public confidence and national security.

Osagie urged the National Assembly to amend the Act and Section 175 of the Constitution to exclude terrorism offenders from the prerogative of mercy. Former chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Young Lawyers Forum, Mr. Uwomano Aki, supported the proposal, describing terrorism as a direct attack on the nation's sovereignty, security and collective existence.
