Taranto industrial crisis: workers and citizens protest as redundancy funds expand

The industrial crisis in Taranto has intensified as Acciaierie d’Italia, currently in extraordinary administration, prepares to expand redundancy funds to potentially cover 8,622 employees. This development coincides with significant social unrest in the city.

Thousands of citizens recently held the “Taranto torna a vivere” demonstration, protesting against industrial pollution and demanding environmental remediation and health protections. Medical professionals have reported an increasing incidence of cancer among both children and adults in the region, linked to long-term exposure to oncogenic agents.

Simultaneously, metalworkers' unions (Fim, Fiom, Uilm, and Usb) concluded a five-day strike that included blockades of the SS7 and the Eni refinery. The unions agreed to remove these blockades following a meeting with the Puglia Region and the announcement of a government meeting at Palazzo Chigi scheduled for October 27. While the immediate physical protests have subsided, concerns remain high regarding job security and the implementation of a new industrial model that balances employment with public health.
