Taranto refinery blockade causes fuel shortages in southern Italy

Labor protests regarding the future of the former Ilva steelworks have caused significant fuel shortages across southern Italy. Workers have blockaded access to the Eni refinery in Taranto, disrupting the distribution of diesel and gasoline. Eni reports that over 50 of its 300 Enilive service stations in the region have run out of fuel, and fuel shortages have been declared at the Bari and Brindisi airports.

In response to the crisis, the Italian government approved a decree that extends special furlough measures for workers and contractors until June 2027. The decree also aims to maintain certain plant areas in a state of readiness while awaiting a Supreme Court ruling. However, trade unions have rejected these measures as insufficient, calling for more robust state intervention and a long-term industrial solution to protect jobs and manage the transition to green steel production.

While the refinery remains operational, Eni has warned that a continued lack of technical gases and chemicals could necessitate a controlled shutdown of certain units. In Taranto, protesters have occasionally allowed limited passage for fuel tankers to ensure diesel supplies for local public transport services.
