Ex-Maoist leader Mallojula Venugopal Rao appointed university coordinator
Mallojula Venugopal Rao, a former high-ranking Maoist leader known as Bhupathi, has been appointed as a coordinator for Gondwana University’s ‘Ekal’ initiative in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra. Rao, who surrendered in October 2025 along with 61 associates, will work on a three-month contract to support tribal rights and constitutional awareness.
In his new role, Rao will work with Sahayog Mitras (support facilitators) to conduct classes and raise awareness regarding Gram Sabha powers and various government policies. He will also contribute to research at the Tribal Research Centre and assist in monitoring government schemes within the district.
Previously a prominent strategist for the banned CPI (Maoist) with a significant bounty on his head, Rao stated his intention to work within the framework of the Constitution. His appointment followed an application process and a recommendation from the Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police to the university's vice-chancellor.
