Ex-Mexicali Security Director Charged Over Youth Disappearances

The State Attorney General’s Office in Baja California, through its Special Units Prosecutor’s Office, held an indictment hearing for former Mexicali Public Security Director Pedro Ariel and four other former officials—Juan Carlos, Luis Alonso, Eduardo and Kevin. They are accused of forced disappearance of two young people in January 2023 near the bar area on Francisco L. Montejano road, as well as vehicle theft and organized crime involvement. The court ordered preventive detention for the accused, while they sought an extension of the constitutional 144‑hour period before a formal arraignment. Prosecutors reiterated their commitment to continue the investigation, ensure justice and combat impunity.

The case highlights alleged misconduct by senior security officials in Mexicali and underscores ongoing efforts by Mexican authorities to address forced disappearances and related crimes.
