Victor Romero indicted for murder in George Washington Bridge shooting
A Manhattan grand jury has indicted retired NYPD detective Victor Romero, 62, on second-degree murder charges. The indictment follows a fatal road-rage incident on October 20 on the George Washington Bridge.
Prosecutors allege that Romero nearly collided with Koran Irvine, 46, a Con Edison employee, before aggressively following his vehicle. Romero is accused of pulling alongside Irvine’s car and firing a shot through the rear passenger-side window, causing Irvine to crash and subsequently die.
Romero was initially charged with manslaughter, a decision that drew significant criticism from the victim’s family, union representatives, and colleagues. The grand jury’s decision reinstates the more serious murder charge. Romero, who is currently out on $1 million bail, is scheduled for his next court appearance on November 23.
