Abdulrahman Alfozan accused of spying at OpenAI for Saudi Arabia

Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old former OpenAI engineer and Saudi national, has been ordered to remain in federal custody following allegations that he planted a sophisticated recording device in a San Francisco executive conference room.

Federal prosecutors allege that Alfozan used artificial intelligence tools to design encrypted recording equipment to intercept sensitive meetings involving OpenAI executives, business partners, and government officials. The device was reportedly discovered on September 30, concealed within a roll of toilet paper and connected to a USB port behind a television.

Court filings indicate that Alfozan maintained frequent WhatsApp communications with an unnamed member of the Saudi royal family, who allegedly attempted to recruit him for a Saudi Arabian artificial intelligence initiative. Prosecutors have designated Alfozan a flight risk, citing his connections to the Saudi government and evidence that a member of the Saudi military paid for one-way business class travel for his wife and son to depart the United States shortly after his arrest.

While the current charge is for the interception of oral communications, which carries a potential five-year prison sentence, authorities noted the case has significant national security implications. Investigations are ongoing to determine if the surveillance was intended to benefit a foreign government.
