Santiago Court revokes detention for eight in Operation Imperio Amsterdam

The Santiago Court of Appeals has issued a significant ruling in the ‘Operación Imperio Ámsterdam’ investigation, revoking the preventive detention of eight defendants. These individuals, including key figures Andrés Astorga Rodríguez, Mario Astorga de Valenzuela, and Gino Athens Athens, will now face less restrictive measures such as national travel bans, bi-weekly check-ins, and prohibitions on communicating with other suspects.

The court also modified the house arrest status for two other involved parties. However, former television personality Camilo Huerta remains under total house arrest, as his defense did not participate in these specific appeals. The investigation, led by the Aysén Regional Prosecutor's Office, targets a criminal structure suspected of using medicinal cannabis businesses as a front for drug trafficking, cannabis cultivation, illicit association, and money laundering.

In a separate but related legal development regarding extortion and kidnapping networks, the Santiago Guarantee Court is determining the status of PDI sub-commissioner Pablo Gajardo Romo and three civilians. This case involves a group accused of simulating police procedures to kidnap victims for ransom. Additionally, former prosecutor Vinko Fodich and others have accepted preventive detention as the investigation into this extortion ring continues.
