Exarcheia: Burglars and police trapped in apartment

An unusual incident occurred in the Exarcheia neighborhood of Athens, where two burglars and responding police officers became trapped inside an apartment.

The two suspects, identified as being of Georgian origin, had targeted an apartment while the owners were away on vacation. After failing to breach the main entrance of the building, they entered the residence through a balcony door. Neighbors noticed the activity and alerted the police.

Responding officers entered the apartment via the same balcony door to apprehend the suspects. While the police successfully detained the two men and recovered stolen items, they discovered that the apartment's main door was locked and could not be opened from the inside. This left both the officers and the suspects trapped within the unit.

The Fire Service was called to the scene to resolve the situation. Firefighters successfully evacuated all individuals from the apartment via the balcony. The suspects, who reportedly have prior records for similar offenses, remain under investigation.
