Axcelis Technologies breaks ground on new Pyeongtaek facility

Axcelis Technologies, a leading provider of ion implantation solutions for the semiconductor industry, has officially broken ground on a new manufacturing facility in the Oseong Foreign Investment Region of Pyeongtaek, South Korea. The project involves an investment of approximately $35 million to $41 million (57.5 billion KRW) to expand the existing Axcelis Asia Operations Center (AAOC).

The new facility, spanning roughly 18,800 to 20,000 square meters, will include cleanrooms for equipment manufacturing, a hub warehouse for parts distribution across Asia and Europe, and a customer training center. The expansion aims to transform the site from a production center into a comprehensive hub encompassing R&D, prototype production, and technical education.

Scheduled for completion in the second half of 2028, the facility is expected to strengthen the semiconductor supply chain by increasing production capacity for ion implantation equipment, which is critical for controlling electrical conductivity in chips. The expansion follows a previous investment announcement made in the United States in September. Local officials, including the Governor of Gyeonggi Province, noted that the investment supports the region's goal of becoming a global semiconductor hub and will foster cooperation with domestic materials, components, and equipment suppliers.
