Excessive bone broth consumption linked to kidney failure risk

Medical experts are warning that certain nutrient-dense soups, when consumed excessively, can cause severe kidney damage and cardiovascular strain. A case in Taiwan highlights this risk, involving a man in his 60s who required emergency medical intervention after consuming concentrated bone broth three times a day for two weeks.

Following a bone fracture, the man consumed large amounts of bone broth intended for recovery. This led to symptoms including leg swelling, decreased urine output, and shortness of breath. Doctors found his glomerular filtration rate had dropped to 14, nearing end-stage renal failure. The condition was attributed to an overload of phosphorus and potassium. While medical intervention helped stabilize his kidney function, experts note that kidney damage is often difficult to reverse.
