Excessive Mobile Use Linked to Posture Problems and Elderly Social Media Dependency

Research associates prolonged use of smartphones, computers and other screens with neck and shoulder pain, eye strain, reduced physical activity and temporary loss of motor coordination. The forward‑head posture, often called “tech neck” or “text neck,” increases muscle effort in the cervical region and can cause stiffness, fatigue and headaches. Eye‑related symptoms, termed digital eye strain, include blurry vision, dryness and headaches; experts advise the 20‑20‑20 rule and maintaining screen distance at arm’s length.

Health specialists also warn that excessive social‑media use among older adults can become a silent addiction. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and Facebook may provide connection but can lead to isolation, anxiety, insomnia and exposure to misinformation or scams. Families are urged to watch for signs like irritability, withdrawal from prior activities, sleep disruption and compulsive checking of devices, and to encourage balanced, purposeful digital habits.
