Excessive protein consumption may damage kidneys, experts warn
Medical experts are warning that long-term and excessive protein consumption can place significant strain on the kidneys. While a single high-protein meal is unlikely to cause harm to a healthy individual, continuous overconsumption forces the kidneys to work harder to filter out waste products like urea.
Physician Joshua Kinjones notes that the early stages of kidney disease often lack clear symptoms, meaning renal function could be declining without the individual feeling ill. Urologist S. Adam Ramin emphasizes that the duration and frequency of high protein intake are the primary concerns. Experts suggest that plant-based protein sources are generally better for kidney and heart health. Symptoms such as foamy urine or swelling in the feet and ankles should not be ignored, as they may indicate existing kidney issues.
