Excessive sweating and its potential health implications

Sweating is a natural bodily response to regulate temperature during heat or physical activity. However, sudden changes in perspiration patterns can indicate underlying health issues.

Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by excessive sweating that occurs regardless of ambient temperature or physical exertion, often affecting the palms, soles of the feet, armpits, and face. Dermatologist Débora Cadore, a member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, notes that a sudden shift in an individual's habitual sweating pattern warrants medical evaluation. Such changes may be linked to hormonal fluctuations, thyroid dysfunction, or the use of certain medications.

There is also a distinction between physical and emotional sweating. Physical sweat is triggered by rising body temperatures to prevent overheating, primarily through eccrine glands. Emotional sweat, often referred to as “cold sweat,” is triggered by the nervous system during moments of anxiety, fear, or stress, driven by the release of adrenaline.
