Exchange For Change announces zero producer fees for UK Deposit Return Scheme launch
Exchange For Change has announced that producer fees for the United Kingdom’s Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) will be set at 0 pence per container for the first 15 months of operation. This zero-fee period will run from the scheme’s launch in October 2027 through December 2028, a move intended to reduce the financial burden on businesses during the initial implementation phase.
Following this introductory period, fees are projected to rise in January 2029. Based on current data, aluminum and steel containers are expected to incur a fee of 0.6 pence per unit, while PET beverage containers are estimated to cost 2.3 pence per unit. These rates are expected to remain in place until December 2032, though they are subject to change.
Exchange For Change stated that the fee structure was developed following consultations with producers and retailers of various sizes. The organization plans to validate and reconfirm fees in May 2027, with annual reviews scheduled once the system is active. The fees are designed to help finance the operating costs of the scheme while maintaining long-term financial sustainability.
