Exclusive Brethren under inquiry for alleged election disruption

A parliamentary inquiry is investigating the Exclusive Brethren following allegations that the Christian sect attempted to disrupt the 2025 federal election. The probe is examining claims that the group paid far-right activists to interfere with appearances by the Albanese government during the campaign trail, as well as broader efforts to support the coalition.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke described the allegations as ‘chilling,’ warning that the potential for physical intimidation to become a ‘fee for service’ poses a significant risk to Australian democracy. He emphasized the need to ensure such conduct is rejected as an aberration.

Lloyd Grimshaw, the director of the Brethren, testified during the inquiry that the church has been the subject of ‘extraordinary attacks.’ He stated that while members participated in the election, they did so under their own names and volition rather than on behalf of the church. Grimshaw also denied that the church or its directors made any reportable political donations.
