Exercise Addiction Risks Highlighted in Greek Health Review

Regular physical activity is widely recognized for preventing chronic disease, improving mood and fitness. However, a recent study published in the Journal of Behavioral Addictions warns that exercise can become excessive and turn into a compulsive behavior.

Excessive exercise is defined by an uncontrollable urge to train, anxiety, guilt or irritability when a session is missed, and a tendency to prioritize workouts over family, work or rest, even when injured. Researchers note that this pattern often masks deeper issues such as anxiety, depression, low self‑esteem, eating disorders or pressure to achieve an ideal body. The compulsive drive can also trigger the release of endocannabinoids, creating a euphoric feeling that reinforces the behavior.

Health professionals advise balancing discipline with moderation, recognizing warning signs like persistent training despite pain, inability to skip a planned session, and neglect of other responsibilities.
