Exercise science: Sprinting impacts blood proteins more than moderate activity

Research from Rockefeller University indicates that short, high-intensity sprints can significantly alter blood composition more effectively than longer, moderate exercise. A study comparing six sets of 30-second maximum-effort sprints against 90 minutes of moderate cycling found that sprinting changed nearly a quarter of the observed proteins and affected over 200 metabolites. These changes included an immediate increase in proteins related to tissue remodeling, hormonal signaling, and blood vessel growth.

Furthermore, human fat cells exposed to blood taken after sprinting showed extensive changes in gene activity regarding energy processing and hormone response. In contrast, moderate cycling resulted in minimal changes to gene activity, with significant shifts in fatty acids and liver-derived proteins only appearing three hours after the activity.

Separately, physiotherapist Ľudovít Nemec has challenged the common perception that swimming is a universal remedy for spinal health. He noted that professional swimmers often experience lower back pain and emphasized that determining the exact cause of back pain is complex due to genetic and biopsychosocial factors. He noted that approximately 80% of the population will experience lower back pain at some point in their lives.
