Exeter Airport conducts successful hydrogen-powered ground equipment trials
A study led by Exeter Airport, Cranfield University, and ULEMCo has provided new operational evidence regarding the use of hydrogen-powered ground equipment in aviation. The Winter Operations HyGPU project tested a dual-fuel hydrogen–diesel ground power unit under winter operating conditions to assess safety, reliability, and practical implementation.
The trial results indicate that the equipment performed reliably without significant operational problems or safety incidents. During eight operational days and 15 tests, the unit consumed 7.41kg of green hydrogen, which displaced approximately 24.23 litres of diesel and prevented roughly 63.9kg of carbon dioxide emissions. Ground crews reported minimal practical differences when operating the converted equipment compared to conventional diesel units.
The findings suggest that dual-fuel hydrogen technology may be most effective for equipment used during continuous or long operating cycles. This project, supported by the Connected Places Catapult and overseen by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, contributes to the development of hydrogen infrastructure, safety frameworks, and investment strategies for the aviation sector.
