Exeter museum opens Bayeux Tapestry history exhibition
A new exhibition titled ‘Bayeux Around Britain’ has opened at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery (RAMM) in Exeter. The display, which runs until July 11, 2027, is part of a nationwide partnership with The British Museum to explore the history of the Norman invasion and the significance of the Bayeux Tapestry.
The exhibition features archaeological finds from Exeter that connect to the tapestry, including pottery from both Saxon and Norman periods and coins depicting historical figures such as Edward the Confessor, Harold II, and William I. These artifacts highlight the city's historical ties to France and the era of the 1066 conquest.
Beyond local artifacts, the Bayeux Tapestry itself serves as a vital historical record. The 70-meter-long embroidery depicts 58 scenes of the Norman conquest of England. Architectural historians note that the tapestry provides unique insights into the 11th-century built environment, representing 33 different buildings ranging from palaces and religious structures to simple dwellings.
