Exide Technologies cuts emissions as China ramps up major battery projects
European battery maker Exide Technologies published its 2026 ESG report, highlighting a 21% drop in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse‑gas emissions compared with fiscal 2022 and an improved CDP rating from ‘C’ to ‘B’. The company said the share of recycled or recovered materials in its production rose to 77% and it remains on track for a 30% emissions reduction target by 2030. Exide’s three European lead‑acid recycling facilities now operate with strict lead‑emission limits, though water‑sulfate limits are not yet universal, and energy use has risen due to higher output and plant electrification.
In parallel, China’s battery sector announced several capacity‑expansion milestones. Shanghai Pret Composites’ subsidiary plans a 500 million‑yuan upgrade of prismatic lithium‑ion production lines in Jiangsu, expected to add 6 GWh of annual capacity by mid‑2027. The company also completed the first acceptance phase of an 80 GWh lithium‑battery base in Xiamen. Additionally, Tongxing Haosheng secured environmental‑impact approval for a 10,000‑ton‑per‑year sodium‑ion cathode‑material project in Sichuan, part of a larger 20,000‑ton phase, underscoring accelerating diversification of battery chemistries in the region.
