Romania awaits S&P Global credit rating decision amid political impasse

Romania faces a critical sovereign credit rating review by S&P Global on October 2, 2026. The country currently holds a BBB- rating with a negative outlook, the lowest tier of investment grade. A potential downgrade to 'junk' status could increase government borrowing costs and restrict access to international investors.

The review occurs amid a five-month political impasse following the failure of the Mureșan Cabinet to secure a vote of confidence. This instability has already impacted financial markets, with ten-year bond yields rising by 60 to 80 basis points and the Romanian leu hitting recent lows. Interim Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare expressed optimism, citing reduced deficits and increased investments, but acknowledged that political stability remains a vulnerability.

Separately, Fitch Ratings has assigned Exim Banca Românească its first international rating, providing a 'BB' long-term issuer default rating and a 'BB+' long-term deposit rating with a stable outlook. This follows a capital increase in 2025 intended to support the bank's development strategy.
