Hungarian authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the state-owned Export-Import Bank (Eximbank) following allegations of abuse of office and mismanagement of funds. The probe, initiated after complaints from the Ministry of Economy and Energy, involves four specific cases uncovered during an internal audit.

One major focus of the investigation is a one billion euro loan granted to North Macedonia, which featured a 3.25% interest rate and a full state guarantee. Prime Minister Péter Magyar has suggested that funds intended to support Hungarian businesses may have been diverted to support a foreign political ally and benefit companies close to the previous administration of Viktor Orbán.

Other cases under scrutiny include a 59 billion HUF financing deal related to the Sofitel hotel and a company linked to István Tiborcz, and a 126 billion HUF project involving an African infrastructure deal linked to the construction company Duna Aszfalt. On August 31, police seized thousands of pages of internal documents from the Ministry of Economy to assist in the ongoing criminal proceedings.
