Exosatellite system 71 ly away forces new planetary classification

Astronomers have identified an unusual planetary system about 71 light‑years from Earth. The system consists of a red dwarf star with roughly 40 % of the Sun’s mass, around which a brown dwarf orbits. The brown dwarf itself hosts a gas‑giant world nearly the mass of Jupiter, completing an orbit every 170 days at a distance comparable to one‑fifth of Earth‑Sun distance.

The discovery, made with the Very Large Telescope in Chile and published in *Nature*, challenges existing categories of planets, moons and stars. Researchers, led by doctoral student Kevin Hoy of Diego Portales University, suggest the provisional term “exosatellite” for the Jupiter‑mass object, noting that it does not fit traditional definitions of moons or planets. The finding prompts a re‑examination of how astronomers classify objects in vastly different planetary systems.
