Exotic snake recovered after being abandoned in Santa Maria la Carità

An exotic Corn Snake (Pantherophis guttatus), measuring approximately one meter in length, was recovered from a roadway in the countryside of Santa Maria la Carità, near Naples. The animal was reported by a motorist to the Castellammare di Stabia fire brigade, who then alerted the CITES Carabinieri specialized in protecting endangered species.

The snake, which is native to North America and not part of the local fauna, appeared to have been abandoned. Initial inspections revealed the reptile lacked any form of identification, such as a microchip, making it difficult to trace its origin or owner.

The specimen has been placed under criminal seizure and transferred to a specialized facility for medical examination and care. Authorities are continuing investigations to identify those responsible for the abandonment, noting that such incidents pose risks to both the animal and the local ecosystem.
