Expectant mothers protest in Kaunas to save Christian Birth Home

Expectant mothers held a silent protest in Kaunas at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) Rectorate to advocate for the preservation of the Christian Birth Home (KGN). The protesters submitted a formal appeal to the university, urging it to work alongside the Ministry of Health to ensure the facility's continued operation, staff retention, and family-oriented birthing model.

The Christian Birth Home is currently a division of the LSMU Kaunas Hospital. While the Ministry of Health is exploring ways to save the facility, including addressing debts exceeding one million euros, a final decision is pending coordination between the Ministry and LSMU. Proponents of the center emphasize its unique culture of individualized care, minimal intervention, and supportive environment, which attracts families from across Lithuania.

The protest comes as a planned reorganization threatens the facility's future in the coming weeks. Health Minister Linas Kukuraitis has stated that negotiations are underway and that parties are approaching an agreement. The movement to save the center has gained significant public support, including an electronic petition signed by over 13,500 people.
