Experimental DENEB blood test detects colorectal cancer and polyps
A new experimental blood test named DENEB has demonstrated high efficacy in the early detection of colorectal cancer and precancerous polyps. According to a multicenter diagnostic study published in ‘The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology’, the test identified 92% of colorectal cancers in stages I, II, and III, as well as 81% of advanced adenomas.
Unlike existing blood tests that often struggle to detect precancerous changes, DENEB’s ability to identify polyps could allow for early intervention and prevention of cancer progression. The study involved more than 1,500 adults participating in colonoscopy screening programs across China, Japan, and Spain.
Ajay Goel, a professor at the Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope and a study co-author, noted that the detection of 81% of precancerous polyps is a significant breakthrough, as many current tests are effective at finding cancer but fail to detect these early lesions.
