Experimental HIV treatment shows potential for virus control without medication

A study published in the scientific journal Nature has provided evidence that the human immune system may be trained to control HIV without the continuous use of antiretroviral drugs. In a small-scale experiment involving ten individuals, seven participants successfully maintained control of the virus after discontinuing their medication following experimental treatments.

Researcher Steven Deeks, who began his work at San Francisco General Hospital in 1993, led the investigation. While the results are significant as they challenge the long-held medical certainty that the virus inevitably returns if medication is suspended, researchers caution that the study was small. They emphasize that years of further investigation are required before such methods can be established as a standard clinical treatment.
