Expert advice on canine behavior and sleep requirements

Experts provide guidance on managing canine behavior and optimizing sleep environments for dogs. Canine educator Manuel Balibrea notes that when dogs become rigid or stare at other animals, it is often a sign of fear or frustration rather than dominance. He warns that owners often inadvertently increase tension by tightening the leash or holding their breath, which signals potential danger to the animal. To maintain calm walks, experts suggest keeping leashes loose, using distance to avoid triggers, and rewarding positive attention.

Regarding rest, dogs require significant sleep to maintain physical and mental health, with puppies sleeping 18 to 20 hours daily and adults averaging 12 to 14 hours. As dogs age, their sleep needs increase, with seniors often resting between 14 and 18 hours. Proper bed placement and sizing based on the animal's sleeping posture are essential for their recovery and well-being.
