Expert advises against sit-ups for optimal core strength

Dr. Lee Brown, a senior lecturer in strength and conditioning at the University of East London, suggests that traditional sit-ups may not be the most effective method for developing core strength. While sit-ups are a common fixture in various training regimens, Dr. Brown notes they often result in lower abdominal engagement than expected.

Excessive sit-ups can lead to physical complications, including lower back issues and tightness in the hip flexors. This tension can cause the torso to lean forward, creating imbalances that increase pressure on the lower spine.

To better strengthen the core, Dr. Brown recommends alternative exercises such as planks, side planks, farmer’s carries, suitcase carries, and bird dogs. Additionally, practices like Pilates and yoga are noted as effective supplementary methods for improving core stability.
