Expert stresses proper age and specialist for safe circumcision
Prof. Dr. Selami Sözübir, a pediatric surgery and urology specialist at Liv Hospital Ulus, explained that circumcision is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures worldwide. He highlighted health benefits such as reduced risk of urinary‑tract infections, improved hygiene and possible protection against certain viral illnesses.
Sözübir recommended that the optimal timing for the operation is either within the first 18 months of life or after the age of six. He noted three key advantages of newborn circumcision: no need for general anesthesia, faster wound healing with better cosmetic results, and no psychological impact because the infant does not remember the procedure.
The doctor emphasized that circumcision, although brief, remains a surgical intervention and should be performed by experienced pediatric surgeons or pediatric urologists who are familiar with penile anatomy and child communication. He warned against newer marketed techniques, stating that the classic surgical method remains the safest and most reliable approach, while laser or similar methods are often promoted for commercial reasons.
