Expert urges U.S. to prepare for potential Chinese regime collapse

Miles Yu, director of the China Center at the Hudson Institute, has urged United States policymakers to prepare for the potential sudden collapse of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). In a recent commentary, Yu argued that while Washington focuses heavily on countering Chinese influence, there is a dangerous lack of strategic planning regarding the consequences of a sudden regime failure.

Yu noted that while dictatorships can appear unshakeable, historical precedents such as the fall of communist regimes in Eastern Europe in 1989 and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union demonstrate that such transitions can occur with extreme speed. He emphasized that the CCP controls significant global assets, including the world’s largest military by personnel, an extensive intelligence apparatus, advanced biological laboratories, and nuclear weapons, making the management of a potential collapse a matter of critical importance.

In a separate diplomatic development, Chinese leader Xi Jinping concluded a visit to Washington without securing major concessions. Despite the high-profile nature of the visit, Beijing failed to achieve shifts in U.S. policy regarding Taiwan, a longer tariff truce, or improved access to advanced semiconductor technology.
