Expert warns of privacy risks when sharing vacation photos

Communication scientist Emmelyn Croes from Tilburg University is warning about the privacy risks associated with sharing vacation photos on social media. As users post images of hotels, pools, and specific destinations, they may inadvertently reveal sensitive information, such as their exact location or the fact that their home is unoccupied for extended periods.

Croes notes that once an image is online, users lose control over its distribution, as it can be saved, forwarded, or edited. The rise of AI technology has made it increasingly easy to manipulate images. Furthermore, sharing photos often involves the privacy of friends, family, and children, who cannot consent to their likeness being shared. Despite growing awareness of these risks, the immediate social rewards of likes and comments often outweigh the abstract, long-term privacy concerns.
