Experts call for review of 1988 Sydney murder conviction
Academics and legal experts are calling for a review of the 1988 conviction of Stephen “Shorty” Jamieson for the abduction, rape, and murder of 20-year-old Janine Balding in Sydney. A memorandum co-authored by linguistic specialist Dr. Helen Fraser has been tabled in the New South Wales Parliament, prompting a pending response from Attorney-General Michael Daley.
The memorandum utilizes forensic linguistics to argue that a confession typed by a detective may not accurately reflect Jamieson’s actual statements to police. Additionally, experts are calling for an unknown male DNA profile found on a black bandana to be tested against another individual who used the name “Shorty” at the time of the crime.
Supporters of the review, including solicitor Peter Breen and MP Sue Higginson, note that Jamieson has been ruled out by various forensic and DNA tests, raising concerns that the wrong individual has been imprisoned for decades while the actual perpetrator remains free.
