Experts call for stricter regulation of dietary supplements
Consumer advocates and nutrition experts are calling for uniform maximum limits on substances found in dietary supplements due to potential health risks. In Germany, millions of people consume these products daily, often without awareness of the dangers associated with incorrect dosages or combinations.
Nutrition scientist Eva-Maria Endres warns that current regulations are insufficient. She notes that certain plant substances are marketed with unproven effects and can be hazardous; for instance, excessive amounts of coumarin can be toxic to the liver. Furthermore, insufficient manufacturing controls may lead to products containing environmental toxins, illegal ingredients, or microbes.
A study by the Federal Center for Nutrition indicates that 77 percent of respondents take dietary supplements regularly, with over 50 percent doing so at least once a week. Experts advise that healthy adults generally do not need broad supplementation and recommend medical consultation to avoid potential drug interactions.
