Experts Clarify Sweet Taste in Sugar-Free Milk and Stevia Risks
Health professionals explain that the sweet flavor of packaged milk labeled as having no added sugar is not a marketing trick. Dr. Cecep Hermawan says the sweetness comes from the milk’s natural sugars, primarily lactose, and from low‑calorie sweeteners that may be present. He notes that lactose can be broken down into smaller molecules, making it easier to digest and still providing a sweet sensation.
Dr. Tirta Mandira Hudhi warns that stevia, a natural zero‑calorie sweetener often used as a sugar substitute, can cause health problems if consumed in excess. While stevia is many times sweeter than sugar and contains no calories, over‑use may lead to adverse effects. Both experts stress the importance of understanding ingredient labels and moderating intake of alternative sweeteners.
