Experts debate ethical use of AI in photojournalism

Experts in photojournalism are addressing the ethical challenges posed by artificial intelligence and the proliferation of digital devices. During a forum organized by the FOTOCOM 2026 committee, professional photographer Ricardo Rojas stated that while AI can be a useful tool for research and workflow dynamics, its use for manipulating photographic elements is unacceptable, noting that many international agencies prohibit such practices.

Orlando Ugueto, president of the Centro Nacional de Fotografía (Cenaf), warned that the immediacy of AI-generated content often overrides critical analysis by the public. He noted that many viewers lack the technical capacity to detect digital manipulation, leaving them vulnerable to misinformation. Ugueto also highlighted how the ubiquity of mobile devices can interfere with professional, rigorous journalistic work by prioritizing speed over methodological accuracy.
