Experts debunk myths linking autism to parenting and GMOs

During an autism awareness event in Abuja, experts addressed and dismissed widespread misconceptions regarding the causes of autism. Rosemary Mbanefo, founder of the Mindful Bridges Foundation, clarified that autism is a neurodevelopmental condition and is not the result of poor parenting, inadequate discipline, or a curse.

Mbanefo urged the public to stop stigmatizing families, noting that any family can have a child with autism. The foundation aims to promote acceptance and provide lifelong support through advocacy and skills empowerment.

Additionally, scientist Amarachi Clara Onyebuchi addressed claims linking the condition to the consumption of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Onyebuchi stated that there is no scientific evidence to support such links, explaining that autism is primarily a neurodevelopmental genetic defect.
