Experts describe U.S. military campaign in Iran as a strategic defeat

Political analysts and scholars are characterizing the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran as a significant defeat for the U.S. administration. Experts suggest that the U.S. has lost its ability to pressure Iran into submission following military actions that began in late February.

John Mearsheimer, a political scientist at the University of Chicago, stated that the U.S. has no viable solution to regain leverage, noting that the administration is facing shortages of munitions and opposition from Gulf allies. Allies have expressed concerns that further escalation could lead Iran to destroy critical oil facilities and desalination plants.

Vali Nasr of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies noted that Iran is currently in a position to demand concessions, specifically regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts suggest that Iran is leveraging its geography to demand fees from transport ships in exchange for passage through the strait, a situation that experts like Daniel DePetris argue became inevitable following the start of the conflict.
