Experts discuss identity, mental health, and the role of neuroscience

Psychologist Gabriel Rolón and molecular biologist Estanislao Bachrach have shared insights regarding mental health, identity, and emotional stability.

Reflecting on the existentialist philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre, Rolón discussed how identity is shaped by the interplay between past experiences and individual agency. Citing Sartre’s concept that humans are ‘condemned to be free,’ Rolón emphasized that while individuals do not choose their circumstances or early traumas, they possess the freedom to decide how to respond to them. He introduced the concept of ‘faltacidad’—a form of happiness that embraces one's flaws, absences, and wounds—rather than pursuing an unattainable, perfect state.

Complementing these psychological perspectives, Estanislao Bachrach highlighted the biological aspects of emotional well-being. He noted the impact of sensory intelligence and meditation on brain structure, suggesting that consistent practice can physically modify neurons and improve attention. Bachrach also pointed to the gut-brain connection, suggesting that certain physiological patterns can help mitigate suffering and pain.
