Experts discuss the impact of human-animal bonds on pet behavior

Experts in animal behavior and veterinary medicine are highlighting how the human-animal bond and interaction methods influence behavioral issues in pets. Veterinarian Soraya Beuk, a specialist in anthrozoology and canine education, discusses how improper interpretations of the relationship between humans and animals—such as relying on concepts of dominance or hierarchy—can deteriorate the bond and trigger behavioral problems.

Beuk emphasizes the importance of general practitioners recognizing early signs that require referral to a clinical ethologist. Additionally, canine training expert Enrique Molina notes that physical contact can serve as a reinforcement tool. He suggests that petting a dog on the shoulder can provide more security than petting the head, which is often used to provide calm. Molina warns against the humanization of pets, stating that treating animals like children without coherent rules can lead to insecurity and behavioral issues.
