Experts Highlight Brain-Boosting Foods Including Broccoli, Berries, and Bananas

Neurosurgeon Dr. Brett Osborn emphasizes that the brain requires proper nutrition to function optimally. He recommends foods rich in antioxidants, healthy fats and anti‑inflammatory compounds such as broccoli (sulforaphane), spinach, kale, blueberries, salmon, herring, sardines, turmeric and ginger. Together with adequate sleep, physical activity and mental engagement, these foods may support concentration, memory and overall mental freshness.

Nutrition specialists also discuss bananas as a brain‑friendly fruit. Bananas supply fiber and prebiotics that support the gut‑brain axis, as well as vitamin C, carotenoids, vitamin B6 and magnesium. These nutrients help reduce neuroinflammation and may lower the long‑term risk of dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases. Animal studies cited in recent reviews show anti‑inflammatory effects of banana compounds, though larger human trials are still needed. Both sources suggest that regularly incorporating a variety of antioxidant‑rich, anti‑inflammatory foods—including a modest portion of bananas—can be a low‑risk strategy to promote brain health.
