Experts offer learning strategies to address declining student performance

Following OECD PISA findings that 15-year-old students struggle to interpret texts longer than 400 words and report increased boredom in learning, neuroeducation experts are offering strategies to improve academic performance.

David Bueno, founder of the Neuroeducation Chair at the University of Barcelona, emphasizes that learning involves modifying the brain rather than just accumulating data. Experts suggest that while intellectual talent is important, effort and learning techniques are more decisive factors for success.

Specialists also highlight the importance of the ‘Pygmalion effect,’ noting that the expectations of teachers and families significantly influence student performance. Rubén J. Calviño, an expert in applied psychology, warns that a lack of confidence from caregivers and educators can lead to a cycle of demotivation, where students stop exerting effort because they feel incapable.
