Experts provide guidance for starting STEM careers
Experts from Fidelity Investments and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) have shared insights on establishing successful careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Jennifer Scott, head of cyber delivery and operations at TCS Ireland, suggests that pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree is the most direct entry path, noting that many organizations recruit directly from universities and even contribute to curriculum development. However, she notes that individuals without a traditional degree can still succeed by starting in operational roles and leveraging ambition and organizational support to transition into technical positions later.
Eimear Coffey, vice-president of technology management and engineering leader at Fidelity Investments, emphasizes the importance of curiosity and active engagement. She highlights that a diverse skillset, adaptability, and an open mind are essential foundations for long-term professional growth in the sector.
