Experts Warn Parents of Sugar Drinks and Water Beads Hazards for Children

Health specialists caution that excessive consumption of sugary drinks and fruit juices can raise the risk of high blood pressure later in life. Cardiology expert Dr. Yusuf Altınkaynak notes that childhood obesity, sedentary habits and high‑sugar beverages contribute to hypertension developing at younger ages. He recommends limiting fruit‑juice intake to one glass per day, favoring whole fruit for fiber, and encouraging water as the primary thirst‑quencher.

Separate warnings target colorful water beads (also called water marbles) that expand up to 400 times their size when soaked. When ingested, they can cause choking, severe intestinal blockage, and may require emergency surgery. Medical professionals, including Dr. Ross Perry, advise parents to remove these beads from homes with young children and to watch for symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, difficulty breathing or lack of appetite. Prompt medical evaluation is essential if ingestion is suspected.
