Explora Journeys launches LNG‑powered Explora III cruise ship in Barcelona

Explora Journeys, the ultra‑luxury brand of the MSC Group, officially christened its new flagship Explora III at the Port of Barcelona. The ceremony was attended by MSC Cruises executive Pierfrancesco Vago, Explora Journeys president Anna Nash, Barcelona port president José Alberto Carbonell and National Geographic educator Cristina Ozores, who served as the ship’s godmother.

Explora III is the first vessel in the MSC fleet to use liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion, marking a step toward lower emissions and future use of bio‑LNG or synthetic LNG. Built by Fincantieri in Italy, the ship offers 19.5 m² of public space per passenger, expanded wellness and culinary venues, a second Owner’s Residence designed by Patricia Urquiola, and a range of luxury amenities. The launch supports MSC’s €7 billion investment plan to reach a six‑ship ultra‑luxury fleet by 2028. After a pre‑delivery “Prelude Journey” in the Mediterranean, Explora III will begin its inaugural season sailing to Lisbon, northern Europe, Iceland, Greenland and the U.S. East Coast.
